Make Your Fleet More Profitable by Choosing the Right Engine Oil
Use the viscosity grade(s) suggested by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the life of the engine, especially during the engine's warranty term, to pick the proper diesel truck engine oil. The appropriate viscosity grades are based on the predicted ambient temperatures, particularly the beginning temperatures.
Because an engine oil's operating temperature does not vary considerably with ambient temperature, the needed viscosity for various applications is rather consistent. The viscosity grade "W," which is linked to the engine's starting temperature and defines the lubricant's viscosity, pumpability, and readiness to lubricate it, is the most important distinction.
Because lubricants with a 5W viscosity grade must flow correctly at lower temperatures than those with a 15W viscosity grade, they are anticipated to be utilized at lower starting temperatures. Even at higher ambient temperatures, most OEMs still prefer multi-grade solutions, such as SAE 15W-40, since the lubricant flows faster through the engine than a pure SAE 40.
Selecting the right diesel truck engine oil
The quality certification or performance level is another key factor to consider when selecting a diesel truck engine oil. The American Petroleum Institute (API) determines this in the USA. The quality levels for diesel engines are denoted by the letter "C" and a second letter allocated in alphabetical order, starting with "A" for the lowest performance and ending with "J" for the most recent and greatest performance. Furthermore, for some applications, there are specific OEM performance criteria that must be met as a condition of the engine's warranty.
You can, however, utilize a 5W viscosity grade instead of a 10W or 15W viscosity grade to provide faster lubricating to engine components during start-up. There are, however, certain disadvantages to consider. Because the 5W recipe uses a lighter base stock, the lubricant may evaporate more than a 10W or 15W formula. The 5W may also be more expensive than the 15W since it breaks down more viscosity improver ingredients in the mix.
A synthetic oil with the same viscosity and quality guarantee might also be used. In terms of engine protection and detergency, fully synthetic lubricants beat conventional mineral oils. In tropical areas, 15W flows nicely at ambient temperatures if you don't have access to the OEM's exact quality and viscosity criteria.
